Hello John,
This week’s fiscal cliff dive will look at what happens now that the House has
passed its version of President Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill.”
Understanding the path ahead is crucial. Here’s a breakdown of where we are,
what comes next, and why it all matters.
1. House Passage ✅
The legislative effort has successfully cleared its first hurdle — by just one
vote! This was always going to be one of the hardest parts of the entire
process, so kudos to House Speaker Mike Johnson for getting it done.
2. Senate Review ⬇️
The bill now moves to the Senate, where relevant committees will examine the
House’s version. Expect substantial revisions, as the Senate will have its own
ideas on taxes, energy, health care, and immigration. These changes could
significantly reshape the bill.
3. Senate Debate and Vote ⬇️
Once reviewed, the Senate will debate its version of the bill and then vote.
Importantly, this legislation isn’t subject to the typical 60-vote filibuster
threshold; a simple majority will suffice to move it forward.
4. Reconciling the Two Bills ⬇️
Given the Senate’s expected revisions, the bill would be returned to the House
for further consideration. A House-Senate conference committee will likely be
formed to negotiate a unified version. This final draft will then require
approval from both chambers.
5. Delivered to President’s Desk 🏛️
Once the House and Senate pass a unified bill, it will be sent to President
Trump for his signature. At that point, the bill would become law.
While these steps might seem straightforward, the journey is anything but
simple.
The Senate’s anticipated revisions mean Speaker Johnson, who worked tirelessly
to secure House passage, will face another battle to rally support later this
summer.
The debt ceiling, which will likely be breached between July and October,
further intensifies the need to act swiftly.
And then there’s the Senate itself, which is notorious for moving at snail’s
pace. It’s often called the “world’s greatest deliberative body,” and do they
ever like to deliberate!
That is why it’s so important that your senators hear from you about the
urgency of getting this bill done ASAP! American families need the economic
certainty that comes with knowing their taxes won’t go up next year.
Once passed, the legislation will deliver critical victories for taxpayers,
including:
* Tax cuts for working families
* Enhanced funding to bolster national defense
* A significant financial boost to advance President Trump’s deportation and
border-control initiatives
* Ending the taxpayer giveaways in Joe Biden’s Green New Deal
* Increasing access to tax-advantaged health savings accounts
We can help this legislation succeed and lay the foundation for a stronger,
more prosperous nation. But the work isn’t over — it’s just beginning.
