Need a little good news, John?

Yesterday, we officially reached the end of the Texas legislative session, or Sine Die, and I’m happy to report that Senate Bill 16 (SB 16) stalled in the Texas Legislature! This bad bill would have created unnecessary new barriers for Texans trying to register to vote by requiring documents that prove their citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate.

Texas is already one of the hardest states to vote in, and VoteRiders’ research shows that nearly 1.3 million Texans would have difficulty providing the proof of citizenship documents that SB 16 would have required.

That’s why VoteRiders advocated strongly against SB 16. Our Texas team testified at the state capitol and worked with our Texas partners on the ground to show the devastating impact this bill would have on Texas voters.

We won this round, but unfortunately, more states are introducing new laws that would restrict access to the vote, including requirements to provide proof of citizenship. VoteRiders will continue to grow our legislative advocacy efforts to meet the increasing demand, and organize against threats to our precious right to vote.
