Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of LGBTQ+ employees, affirming that it is illegal to make employment decisions about someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

This is a great victory for equality in our country.

Each term that I was in the state Senate, I introduced a bill to guarantee employment nondiscrimination by the state of North Carolina. I regret that we never succeeded in getting that bill passed.

So I am thrilled that the Supreme Court has ruled against these discriminatory practices. Employment decisions should be made on the basis of a person’s competence, not their sexuality or gender identity.


With all that it is wrong in the world, it is refreshing to have such a positive development for our nation. This is a moment worth celebrating — and we should — but then we need to get right back to work.

It has taken too many years and too many lives to get to this point. Now that we’re here, we must demand further progress. Our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors, particularly those in communities of color, still do not have all of the rights and protections that they
deserve as Americans. 

Organizations like Equality NC and the LGBTQ Democrats of NC are doing great work in our state, and it’s up to us to do our part as well. I hope you will join me in continuing this important fight.
