Back in the mid-1990s, when I was teaching at Mankato West High School, a group of students asked me if I’d help them start the school’s first gay-straight alliance.
They were concerned about anti-LGBTQ bullying and wanted to create a safe, supportive space for everyone.
My answer? Absolutely.
As a teacher, it was my responsibility to ensure every student felt safe and free to be themselves.
I think about that moment often during Pride Month.
We’ve come a long way since then. But today, Trump and his MAGA allies are doing everything they can to turn back the clock. We can’t let that happen.
Love has only ever won because people like you and me have fought for it.
The work isn’t done until everyone—regardless of who they are or who they love—can live freely and equally. And I won’t stop fighting until that future is real.
