Richland County Republican Party Honors Judge James D. Henson with Memorial Donation

Mansfield, Ohio — The Richland County Republican Party is honored to make a memorial contribution to the First Congregational Church Operations Fund in remembrance of the Honorable Judge James D. Henson, who passed away on April 13, 2025, at the age of 83.

After serving others in the U.S. Army, the FBI, and the Richland County Prosecutor's Office, Judge Henson spent 33 years as a Richland County Common Pleas Court Judge, becoming the longest-serving judge in the county’s history. First elected in 1980 at the age of 38, Judge Henson was not only a leader on the bench but also a pioneer in criminal justice reform. His work to establish the Richland County Substance Abuse Treatment Court in 1997, one of the first such treatment focused programs, marked a turning point in how the justice system addressed addiction and recovery, and became a model for courts across the state and nation.

A proud veteran, dedicated public servant, and active member of the community, Judge Henson embodied the principles of justice, compassion, and civic responsibility. He gave selflessly of his time through his involvement with numerous local organizations, his church, and Veterans’ groups. His legacy will live on, not just through his beloved family, but through the countless other lives he impacted both inside and outside the courtroom.

“Our community has lost a remarkable public servant whose legacy will be felt for generations,” said Representative Marilyn John, Chair of the Richland County Republican Party. “Judge Henson demonstrated a rare combination of strength, compassion, and wisdom that every member of the judiciary should strive for. He had the bravery and determination to always do the right thing, even when it wasn't the easy thing. It has been our honor to know him and call him a friend, and now it is our privilege to recognize a life so well-lived through a donation in his name.”

A celebration of Judge Henson's remarkable life will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church. The Richland County Republican Party encourages others to honor Judge Henson’s memory through contributions to the First Congregational Church, 640 Millsboro Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44903.
