John, the Independent Water Commission has just released its interim report. It’s a first look at recommendations for water industry reform in England and Wales. 👀

Reasons to celebrate...

It's clear that we, the people, have had a profound impact on this report. We surveyed and submitted the voices of nearly 30,000 people for the Commission’s call for evidence.

78% said they're angry with the state of the water industry. And in Sir Jon’s own words, “The volume and quality of responses exceed expectations.”

As a result, the report recognises:

⚠️ Profit-hungry, short-term shareholders driving poor environmental performance

⚠️ Underfunded regulators unable to monitor and enforce environmental law

⚠️ Government failure to plan for the long-term

It’s undeniable. The fact the Commission has even addressed these concerns is down to people power.

The report is missing vital elements needed to achieve real reform of the industry:

👀 There are no strong plans to stop polluters from breaking the law

👀 It doesn't remove water companies primary profit motive

👀 There's no real strategy to transform the water industry so that it protects public health and the environment, not shareholders’ wallets!
