Friend,
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is moving quickly in Congress – with a House Judiciary Committee vote tomorrow and a House floor vote expected next week.
Unfortunately, it does not go nearly far enough. Join us in urging Congress to improve this bill and end drug war-fueled police militarization: [link removed]
This legislation would ban no-knock warrants for drug cases, restrict programs giving military equipment to local police departments, prohibit chokeholds, document police misconduct and use-of-force, and help end racial profiling.
While it’s a step in the right direction, it fails to address the militarization practices that are disproportionately used against people of color in drug investigations.
Congress can address these concerns by banning quick-knock raids, ending programs that allow militarized policing, and shifting funding for the drug war and law enforcement to community resources and services.
This moment requires bold solutions. We’re already seeing significant reforms in places across the country including a major victory we helped achieve in New York [link removed] that would end secrecy around abuses at the hands of law enforcement.
It’s time for major federal reform to help ensure drugs are no longer used as an excuse to target, harass, assault and kill people like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Time is running out to make your voice heard. Demand that your Members of Congress address the drug war’s role in police violence and pass comprehensive reform: [link removed]
Sincerely,
