Dear John,
As Jewish American Heritage Month concludes, we find ourselves reflecting not only on the rich tapestry of Jewish contributions to our society but also on the challenges that persist. Yesterday, in Boulder, Colorado, a peaceful walk organized to advocate for the release of Israeli hostages was violently attacked, resulting in injuries to 12 individuals, including a Holocaust survivor.
This heinous act of antisemitism, which authorities are investigating as a targeted act of terrorism and a federal hate crime, underscores the ongoing threats faced by Jewish communities.
Here in Oregon, we understand that honoring heritage involves more than celebration; it requires standing together, uplifting our communities, and embodying our shared values.
Over the past year, we've drawn strength from Jewish leaders worldwide, none more so than Rachel Goldberg-Polin. Recently, she told graduates at Yeshiva University:
“We are not what we think.
And we are not even what we believe.
In this life, we are what we do.”
Her words resonate deeply. It's not enough to hope for change or believe in justice - we must act. Our collective power lies in our unity and shared commitment to action.
In honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, we invite you to take two meaningful steps:
Contact Your Representatives: Reach out to Senator Wyden, Senator Merkley, and your congressional representative to express your concerns and advocate for issues that matter to you, such as combating antisemitism, defending democratic values, and ensuring the safety and justice of all communities.
Join Us at the State Central Committee Meeting on June 29th: The DPO Jewish Caucus will be present, and we encourage your participation. View the schedule here: dpo.org/scc, and consider joining our caucus at dpo.org/caucuses/jewish-caucus.
Thank you for your partnership and unwavering commitment to justice and community.
Chag Shavuot Sameach,
Democratic Party of Oregon Jewish Caucus
