When we started writing the recent issue of our magazine, we wanted to bring attention to environmental justice issues as Americans headed to the polls in the summer and fall. Then came COVID-19, which quickly revealed itself as an environmental justice issue. Groups who are on the frontlines of the climate crisis are too often the same who face the deadliest outcomes from the virus. Then came more senseless killings of unarmed Black people, further demonstrating the inequalities in our society.

We share these stories about people challenging racism and greed in their communities to provide hope. These warriors press forward and won’t give up the fight as they take on the climate crisis, showing the strength of diverse leaders.
