My friend,

Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island, and Southern Brooklyn...

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL

BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL PASSES OUT OF HOUSE

The passage of the Big Beautiful Bill out of the House marks a historic victory for Staten Islanders, Brooklynites, and families across the nation who have been calling for tax relief. Our legislation builds on the success of President Trump's 2017 tax cuts by making those tax provisions permanent, while delivering additional tax relief for senior citizens, increasing the SALT and Standard Deductions, and expanding the Child Tax Credit to ensure hardworking Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.

The Senate must now act without delay as failure to do so would let key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expire, leading to a $4 trillion tax hike on American families and businesses. It’s time to deliver real results and tax relief and fulfill our commitments to America!

REINING IN NON ESSENTIAL HELICOPTER FLIGHTS OVER NYC

Our bipartisan legislation will ban non-essential helicopter traffic within a 20-mile radius of the Statue of Liberty. We must rein in these helicopter tour companies which have operated without meaningful oversight for decades, risking public safety & disrupting quality of life.

APPLAUDING FAA ACTION TO MODERNIZE NEWARK AIRPORT AND IMPROVE AIR TRAFFIC SAFETY

I support the Federal Aviation Administration’s efforts to expedite the hiring and training of new air traffic controllers by reducing the time between testing and academy admission. I also back initiatives aimed to incentivize experienced controllers to remain on the job beyond their retirement eligibility to ensure continuity in operations as new hires are trained and brought up to speed. These changes are essential to minimizing disruptions and upholding the highest standards of passenger safety.

Our one Big Beautiful Bill also includes $12.5 billion to begin the long-overdue modernization of our nation’s antiquated air traffic control system which has plagued Newark Airport with delays and outages.

IN THE DISTRICT

RALLYING FOR SENIOR TAX RELIEF

IN HOUSE TAX PACKAGE

Prior to the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, I joined seniors at Staten Island’s New Dorp Beach Friendship Club, alongside AARP, and at Brooklyn's Bay Ridge Center to rally support for our effort to cut taxes on Social Security income. The Big Beautiful Bill includes a provision mirroring my legislation to provide a bonus deduction for seniors on Social Security—$4,000 for individuals earning up to $75,000 and $8,000 for married couples earning up to $150,000. This would eliminate the taxes paid on Social Security for individuals within these incomes and the deduction phases out as income increases.

CELEBRATING SALT RELIEF

IN HOUSE TAX PACKAGE

Following the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, I joined local elected officials and community leaders in Staten Island and Brooklyn to celebrate the passage of SALT relief included in the bill and now call on the Senate to follow suit. I’m proud to be delivering long-overdue tax relief to working Americans, middle-class families, and senior citizens.

PORT RICHMOND NORTH SHORE ALLIANCE BANNER CELEBRATION

I joined the Port Richmond North Shore Alliance to honor veterans from our community at their annual banner celebration. One of this year’s inductees was Ted Cohen who was a valued member of our office’s veterans advisory council until he passed in 2023.

STATEN ISLAND STREET RENAMINGS

It was a beautiful day for a street renaming on Staten Island in honor of the Black Angels, African American nurses who treated Tuberculosis patients and helped find a cure….and they did so at a time when they did not even have equal rights in our country. We thank them for their service & honor them with this permanent tribute that will last for generations to come. Thank you Councilmember David Carr for working with me to make this happen!

I also joined with family, friends, and the North Shore Rotary to honor the memory of Raymond J. Pezzoli Esq. with a street co-naming at the corner of Prospect Ave. and Lois Place in Randall Manor. Ray was a caring mentor and long time member of the Rotary and a benefactor of the Staten Island Zoo and other animal causes.

BROOKLYN'S P.S. 205 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

I was happy to join Brooklyn’s P.S. 205 for its 100th Anniversary celebration. Generations of young people received a quality education in these halls and went on to make our community proud. We wish them another 100 years!

WELCOMED COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND PRESIDENT TIMOTHY LYNCH

I welcomed College of Staten Island President Timothy Lynch to our office to discuss the exciting new programs in STEM, healthcare and building trades the school is offering and get an update on the new lab we secured federal funding for. We look forward to the ribbon cutting! As students graduate today, we congratulate them on their success and wish them the best in their next chapter.

EAST SHORE SEAWALL UPDATE

I met with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the ongoing Phase 1 work for the Staten Island East Shore Seawall, upcoming dredging and other critical resiliency and remediation projects for our community.

Op-Ed: Rooting out fraud is essential to preserve Medicaid, Medicare

Today, Medicare and Medicaid deliver essential healthcare coverage to over 10 million New Yorkers. Social Security supplies supplement income to over 70 million Americans, representing about 1 in 5 residents in the United States. Generations of hardworking Americans have paid diligently into Social Security and other essential entitlement programs.

I understand just how important they are, as my own parents are Social Security and Medicare recipients, just like so many other seniors and individuals who rely on these programs. I will always fight to protect our seniors and individuals with disabilities who depend on Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security benefits.
