Lawmakers follow a well worn playbook when responding to police violence towards Black people:

A terrible murder -- of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, of Rayshard Brooks, of too many others -- at the hands of police prompts public outcry, organizing by the Black community to demand justice, and grassroots activism across the county. Some elected officials pledge to do more to combat racist policing, but like clockwork, meaningful police accountability fails to materialize.

Why is real change so hard? Money has a lot to do with it.

Stand Up America is committed to combating the corrupt role of money in our politics. And the problem is not just corporate PACs -- it’s also police unions.

The Fraternal Order of Police -- the nation’s largest police association -- spends millions of dollars to elect politicians who support “tough on crime” policies that harm the communities police are sworn to protect. By contributing money to federal, state, and local candidates, and even prosecutors meant to hold them accountable, police unions use their power and influence to preserve a rigged, racist system.

If this sounds utterly corrupt and unjust to you, that’s because it is.

Join us and our partners at Color of Change in demanding that lawmakers return donations from police unions like the Fraternal Order of Police and refuse them in the future. Sign the petition now:

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, the president of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, Bob Kroll, called George Floyd a “violent criminal” and said protesters were part of a “terrorist movement.”

Bob Kroll isn’t an outlier. Across the country, police unions stand in direct opposition to the policing reforms criminal justice advocates have been demanding for years. They use their power to reject accountability, defend racially discriminatory practices, and preserve a broken system. Not only that, in recent years they have successfully lobbied the Trump administration for greater power, less accountability, and access to military-grade weapons that belong in warzones -- not our neighborhoods.

It’s time for our elected officials to take a stand. Campaign donations from groups like the Fraternal Order of the Police distort our politics and rig the system against Black and brown Americans, devaluing the voices of those most affected by police violence and elevating the voices of those who commit that violence against them.

We don’t have any time to waste. Click here to call on our elected officials to return and refuse donations from police unions.

We must break the hold that police unions have on our elected officials so we can push forward the demands of the Black Lives Matter movement in a meaningful way. Let’s start by holding our elected officials to a higher standard.

Thanks for doing what’s right.

Political Director, Stand Up America.
