Friend of Washington's Environment,
June is Orca Action Month [[link removed]]!
This year's Orca Month theme is Threads of Life: Connecting Orcas, People, and the Future We Share. We'll learn how Southern Resident orcas connect us — geographically, culturally, ecologically, and spiritually.
This distinct population of killer whales rely heavily on salmon for their diet. These amazing marine mammals, the world’s largest species of dolphin, are part of our Pacific Northwest regional and cultural identity. Sadly, this population is on the Endangered Species List. The Endangered Species Act is one of our nation's most important, successful, and popular laws — it has prevented the extinction of 99% of the species since enacted. Despite a federal recovery plan and dedicated efforts by our partners throughout the Salish Sea, their population is precariously hovering around 73 individuals, according to the Center for Whale Research's 2024 census.
Orca Action Month will draw on people's connection, love, and respect for the Southern Resident orca to protect the Endangered Species Act from being dismantled.
The Endangered Species Act faces significant attacks from Congress. Tell your member of Congress: Protect imperiled ocean life by opposing any effort to weaken the Endangered Species Act.

Among the threats Southern Resident orcas face are noise and disturbance in their environment, toxic contaminants in the marine food web, and, above all else, depletion of salmon throughout their range.
Orca Action Month, sponsored by the Orca Salmon Alliance, is a month-long campaign that looks to bring awareness to Southern Resident orcas and these issues through social and traditional media outreach, events, and calls to action. Check out the full calendar [[link removed]] to plan your June activities!
And please sign the petition [[link removed]] to save the Endangered Species Act from extinction.
Sincerely,
Rein, Washington Conservation Action
