Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged.

The three officers who assisted Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd have been arrested and charged.

Confederate monuments across the world - from Birmingham, Alabama, to Bristol, England - are coming down.

It's a start. But it's not enough.

We need accountability and we need bold, unprecedented reforms to stop police misconduct. I've joined Rep. Barbara Lee and 213 of my colleagues in the House to support a bipartisan bill to bring justice to policing. It includes:

✔️Bold unprecedented reforms to end police misconduct, reform immunity laws, and ban racial profiling

✔️A national ban on choke and carotid holds

✔️Transformation of the culture of policing to address systemic racism and help save lives

✔️A requirement for state and local police to use existing federal funds to purchase and fully utilize body cameras

✔️Language to empower the US Justice Department civil rights division to investigate and mandate reform of individual departments through court orders

The Justice in Policing Act is a comprehensive approach to ensure transparency in law enforcement - making data on police misconduct publicly available, and ensuring abusive officers are held accountable for their actions, not shuffled around the system. It would make it easier to successfully prosecute police misconduct such as racial and religious profiling. It also limits the transfer of military equipment to police.

This won't be easy. When he should have been amplifying calls for systemic reform, our own president accused a 75-year-old man of faking a head injury at the hands of the police.

Trump's Republicans have stonewalled and delayed for far too long. We're not backing down until we can hold our law enforcement accountable Together, we will ensure that those who enforce the law also obey the law.
