What is World No Tobacco Day?
It's a day to focus attention on the global health crisis caused by tobacco use, the world's number one cause of preventable death. It was started in 1987 by the World Health Organization (WHO). And it happens every year on May 31st.
What makes this year so important?
This year’s theme is “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.” It serves as a timely reminder of how the tobacco industry is continuously introducing products and features aimed at addicting the next generation of young customers.
Companies such as Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco continue to introduce products and marketing tactics to target young people and keep consumers addicted to a wide range of harmful and addictive products like e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products and nicotine pouches.
To attract young users, the tobacco industry relies on a huge assortment of fun flavors, colorful packaging, slick social media marketing and other tactics to lure kids into using these products and hook them on massive doses of nicotine.
Flavors such as mango, cotton candy and mint remain one of the top reasons young people begin using nicotine and tobacco products.
