August 21, 2019: Sixty (60) years ago today—on August 21, 1959—Hawaii was admitted to the United States and became our country’s 50th state.[1] This stretch of 60 years without adding a new state is the longest in American history.
Alaska became the nation’s 49th state just seven months before Hawaii.
Before that, it had been 47 years since New Mexico and Arizona received statehood status.
