Dear Friend,
Wildfires across the prairies have already forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, and the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan have declared a state of emergency. This early, intense fire season has been particularly devastating for remote Indigenous communities.
We know that in the face of climate disasters, Canadians pull together, mobilize, and take action. This is who we are, and communities are coming together to support and care for evacuees.
We also know that next year, or the year after, or even next month, we will face bigger fires, floods, and other disasters. We need to be prepared, which is something the Green Party has always championed.
But emergency preparedness is not only about planning evacuation routes and building water bombers. Emergency preparedness is also about making sure Canada’s democracy is strong enough to withstand any crisis we are facing, whether it’s climate, economic, or political.
And that begins with fixing our electoral system.
Our broken electoral system doesn’t just distort the vote, it concentrates power, deepens divisions, and leaves us less prepared for the crises of our time.
Researchers have found that in countries with proportional representation, people who disagree on politics are less likely to see each other as enemies or threats. In Ireland, for example, it helped the country get through tough economic times without the deep divisions we’re seeing in the United States, and here in Canada too.
A more representative and proportional voting system would make our government more resilient, trusted, and cooperative—just like communities that work together in a crisis. It would help elect a Parliament that truly reflects the voices of all Canadians, not just those with the biggest platforms or the deepest pockets.
Luckily for us Elizabeth May is already back in Parliament, working to keep this conversation alive and urgent. Thanks to you, we raised $97,316 before Parliament opened, which is just shy of our $100,000 goal!
Now, we’re laying the groundwork for an action campaign to demand that Parliament finally fix our broken electoral system. Because just like in any emergency, when the stakes are this high, there’s no time to waste.

Together, we can push for a Parliament that truly reflects the will of the people—and a future that puts people and the planet first.
With hope and determination,
