Los Angeles Police Department officers racked up $40 million in overtime during the recent civil unrest in the city, but won’t be paid for it, and will instead be given comp time, according to a memo sent out by LAPD Chief Michel Moore, which was obtained by FOX 11. “It’s very disheartening,” said Sgt. Jerretta Sandoz, Vice President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing LAPD rank and file.

Attorney General Xavier Becerra on Monday called for California to create a way to end the law enforcement careers of police officers who engage in serious misconduct, along with other changes in tactics and training in the wake of weeks of national protests over police brutality.But he stopped short of backing proposals to have his office investigate police uses of force and sidestepped questions about nationwide calls to reduce funding for police departments.

LAPD officials on Monday released additional details about a gang-related shooting in Sylmar after a second victim died. The incident occurred about 6:40 p.m. Sunday along the 12900 block of Borden Avenue. Three men were standing on the sidewalk in front of a home during a family gathering when three unknown assailants in a red car jumped out and fired multiple rounds, hitting all three victims, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The assailants got back into the car and drove from the scene. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he eventually died. A third victim was treated at a hospital and eventually released. The victims who died have not been identified pending notification of next of kin.

A 7 year-old boy was hurt when someone fired a shot through the ceiling of a Koreatown apartment building and the bullet struck him, authorities said Monday. It happened at 8:37 p.m. Sunday at 2927 Francis Avenue, according to a dispatcher in the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations Center. The boy was taken to a hospital with stable vital signs, she said. No suspect information was immediately available.

Officials in Los Angeles County are continuing the search for a 59-year-old woman with schizophrenia who has been missing for two weeks. Patricia Claggett, also known as Patricia Vance, was last seen on the 11000 block of Alameda Street in Lynwood. She is described as an African American woman, 5’7″, 185 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. No clothing description was provided. A former USC admissions official who accepted thousands of dollars in payments to ensure graduate school admission for unqualified international students pleaded guilty Monday to a federal fraud charge. Hiu Kit David Chong pleaded guilty via videoconference to a single wire fraud count, a felony carrying a penalty of up to 20 years behind bars. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 31. Chong, a 36-year-old Arcadia resident, admitted in his April plea agreement that he falsified applicants’ admission packets with doctored college transcripts, phony letters of recommendation and fraudulent personal statements. As the assistant director of USC’s Office of Graduate Admissions from September 2008 to March 2016, Chong told Chinese nationals he could assist them in obtaining admission into a graduate degree program at the university.

A father near San Diego is accused of intentionally driving off a cliff with his two young daughters inside the vehicle. A woman called police on Saturday saying the man took the children, who are both reportedly 2 years old, and threatened to drive off the Coronado Bay Bridge. Minutes later, officers arrived and went down a cliff where they found the father and one of his daughters outside of a truck, which was upside down in the water. The second daughter was rescued from the wreckage. Medics rushed all three to hospitals to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the man was taken into custody for attempted murder. Their identities have not yet been released.

The former police officer accused of terrorizing California during a series of rapes and killings nearly a half-century ago attributed to the Golden State Killer is expected to plead guilty this month in a deal that will spare him the death penalty, according to multiple sources. Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., 74, is set to enter a guilty plea to 13 murders and kidnapping charges from as many rapes in a yet-to-be determined Sacramento County courtroom on June 29. The crimes occurred during the 1970s and ‘80s. Many sources who were notified about the legal arrangement spoke on condition of anonymity because they were asked to not disclose the deal to the media. Nor are any legal motions outlining the plea deal required to be filed in court before June 29.

An officer with the Baltimore Police Department underwent surgery early Sunday after being shot while breaking up a party, authorities said. The unidentified officer suffered the gunshot wound during a struggle with the driver of an SUV who had pulled into the parking lot “at a high rate of speed,” Baltimore Police said in a statement. “At some point, our officer engaged with the driver and became aware that the driver was armed with a gun,” police said. “A struggle ensued and our officer’s partner intervened to assist in gaining control of the suspect.” The suspect was taken into custody after the officer was shot. The injured officer is now in stable condition after being rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, the Baltimore Sun reported.

A man was rescued by firefighters Sunday afternoon after falling about 50 feet near Stoney Point Park, 10870 Topanga Canyon Blvd., in Chatsworth, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The man, about 60 years old, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, the LAFD said. The Fire Department said ground and air units were dispatched to the incident at 4:10 p.m. and performed a hoist operation to lift the patient to an air ambulance.

About half of the restaurants visited by Los Angeles County health inspectors over the weekend were not complying with coronavirus protocols, officials disclosed Monday. L.A. County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer reported that approximately 50% of the 2,000 restaurants visited by inspectors were not complying with health guidelines. “They’ll (the inspectors) be revisiting all of the restaurants that were not in compliance and issuing them an order to come into compliance,” Ferrer said. “We’ve been doing a lot of education, but, starting this week, we’re actually gonna revisit places where we noted that people still had concerns.” However, Ferrer said the numbers were an improvement on last week, where the rate of restaurants in compliance was under 25%. She said some of the issues appeared to stem from a lack of understanding of the protocols.

Los Angeles Councilman Mitch O'Farrell will introduce a motion Tuesday calling for installation of a permanent memorial commemorating Sunday's massive All Black Lives Matter march through Hollywood. Although he did not specify what type of memorial he had in mind, on Monday O'Farrell ordered that crews stop efforts to remove the mural-like words "All Black Lives Matter'' that were painted on Hollywood Boulevard between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive for the march. "We had a once-in-a-generation moment this weekend in Hollywood as tens of thousands gathered for a peaceful demonstration on one of the most recognizable boulevards in America,'' O'Farrell said. "We now have a chance to memorialize the movement in a meaningful way. I look forward to working with the Black LGBTQIA Action Committee and other community members on this project.''
