I need to ask if you can make a donation to fight for our freedoms and democracy.

When I first heard that a book I wrote was one of hundreds banned from the U.S. Naval Academy library under the Trump regime, I found the news incredibly concerning.

You see, my book — Our Time Is Now — chronicles the erosion of voting rights, highlights the far right’s attacks on democracy, and provides a blueprint for ending voter suppression and empowering our fellow citizens to uphold and expand free and fair elections.

And if the far right actually believes that my book about ensuring democracy is a threat to their ability to destroy it, then I’m on to something.

In addition, I’m proud to be in the company of authors like Dr. Carol Anderson, a renowned historian and professor of African American studies who serves on the Board of Directors for Fair Fight Action. Her book White Rage: The Unspoken Truth Of Our Racial Divide was also banned. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism, and it analyzes the struggle for Black Americans to be full participants in our democracy.

Of course, the ultimate target of book bans like these is the power that we, the people, possess. The power that MAGA Republicans would suppress. The power that we must use.

With our freedoms facing grave threats, and with people in power trying to keep us from understanding how to defend it, we must double down in our fight for democracy.

And we must support groups like Fair Fight that do the vital work of making our democracy live up to its promise, tackling the rise of authoritarianism, and ensuring free and fair elections.

That’s why I need to ask if you can make a donation of any amount to Fair Fight. Every contribution helps make sure they can combat voter suppression in this new Trump era and help build a democracy where every voice is heard and empowered.

Let’s be clear: You ban books if you’re afraid of the knowledge they can provide and the questions they may inspire readers to ask.

And you suppress the vote if you’re afraid you could not win a truly fair election — or if you believe some people are inherently unworthy of participating in our democracy.

My book was banned alongside works of literature and scholarship by people like Maya Angelou and Ibram X. Kendi.

Mind you, they did not ban Mein Kampf, by Adolf Hitler.

The targeted books are about topics like race, gender, and public policy, and they fall under MAGA’s attack on DEI — also known as “diversity, equity, and inclusion”; also known as the basis for all the movements of progress and opportunity we’ve achieved as a nation.

Moves like these reveal the Trump regime’s outright contempt for civil rights and the ability of women, people of color, and marginalized communities to be part of American life. And as they continue working to suppress our voices, we must keep on fighting back.

I’m proud that Fair Fight stands strong against attacks on our democracy.

I founded Fair Fight after the 2018 elections to help make sure every eligible voter can easily register to vote, cast their ballot, and have it counted. Since its founding, Fair Fight has successfully combated voter suppression, made it possible for more people to exercise their power and their voice at the ballot box, and helped elect pro-democracy champions from municipal governments to the U.S. Senate and the presidency.

Fair Fight will continue building pro-voter political power in the South, expanding access to voting, preventing mass voter purges, and pioneering strategic analysis and innovation to counter rising authoritarianism.

But none of this work is possible without dedicated supporters like you.

Will you make a contribution of $30 or any amount today to help defend the freedom to vote and strengthen our democracy? Every contribution adds up to fund Fair Fight’s year-round work to protect and strengthen our democracy.

P.S. Republicans wouldn’t be focused on banning books and suppressing votes if they weren’t terrified of our knowledge and our power. But we won’t let them stop us from exposing their harms and holding them accountable at the ballot box. If we want to be able to defend our values, we can’t let them silence our voices.
