America’s Future Depends On Booming Steel Industry

Last week, President Trump announced that U.S. Steel will REMAIN in America— which is a win for Made-in-America manufacturing, especially in Indiana.
A strong Hoosier manufacturing base and a strong American economy depend on a thriving domestic steel industry.
Iron and steel provide high-skilled, good paying jobs, and Indiana is the #1 steel state in America, employing nearly 40,000 Hoosiers.
The planned partnership between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel will create at least 70,000 jobs and invest $14 billion in the U.S., including major investments in Indiana. This is a major victory for not just the steel industry but for American workers, especially here in Indiana.
Now we have to make sure that Nippon Steel’s end of the bargain is upheld. Nippon’s commitments to the United States—including their promise to increase American steel capacity, create new jobs, and work with the U.S. government on national security issues—are critical to our security interests and economic prosperity.
Congressman Mrvan and I recently sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Treasury urging any deal to prioritize our national security. Foreign control puts our defense and supply chains at risk, and we must keep American steel strong.
Thankfully, President Trump made sure this partnership between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel is a strong deal for America and our workers. U.S. Steel’s CEO will be American while a majority of board members will come from the United States.
We need to ensure Nippon holds fast to its commitments and that the interests of the United States are put FIRST. President Trump is right—America’s future depends on a booming steel industry that can compete head-to-head with any country in the world. |
