“SpaceX found some success, and some failure, on ninth Starship flight test from Texas,” Houston Chronicle's Andrea Leinfelder – “SpaceX launched its ninth Starship flight test on Tuesday evening, successfully completing milestones such as flying a previously flown booster, but falling short of the test’s full goals.
The Super Heavy rocket and Starship spacecraft, collectively called Starship, launched from South Texas a little after 6:30 p.m.
Lift off and vehicle separation went as expected. SpaceX was not planning to catch the booster, most of which had previously flown on the seventh flight test, and was instead attempting to collect data with a more aggressive landing in the Gulf of Mexico when Super Heavy exploded.
Starship completed its ascent and went significantly farther than the past two tests, which exploded while climbing into space, but SpaceX lost control of its orientation. The spacecraft also ended with an explosion before landing in the Indian Ocean.
“Starship made it to the scheduled ship engine cutoff, so big improvement over last flight!” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said on X.
“Also, no significant loss of heat shield tiles during ascent. Leaks caused loss of main tank pressure during the coast and re-entry phase. Lot of good data to review,” Musk added.
He pledged that the next three flights would have faster turnarounds, with a launch every three to four weeks. The company just received regulatory approval to launch up to 25 times a year from Starbase, Texas.
