Protecting our Communities and Honoring our Veterans
John,
This week, Governor Braun signed two major public safety bills: Senate
Enrolled Act 324 and House Enrolled Act 1014. “Keeping Hoosiers safe is our top
priority, and we’ve secured several wins for public safety this session," said
Governor Braun. "These bills will increase the penalty for pushing fentanyl on
our streets, help keep police officers safe, and make our communities safer for
Hoosier families.”
SEA 324 increases penalties for fentanyl-related offenses and strengthens
domestic violence protections by allowing courts to require electronic
monitoring as a condition of bail. Governor Braun thanked Senator Aaron
Freeman, the bill’s author, and Representative Chris Jeter, its sponsor, for
their leadership.
HEA 1014 outlines a comprehensive set of public safety reforms. It establishes
that committing a crime while in the country illegally or distributing
controlled substances are aggravating factors in sentencing, and prohibits the
use of public funds for organizing sexually explicit performances.
The law reinforces that force against officers during arrest is never
justified and encourages substance abuse treatment as a mitigating factor in
sentencing, reflecting Indiana’s ongoing commitment to public safety.
On May 29th, Governor Mike Braun joined fellow Hoosier elected officials in
welcoming Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins for coin recognition
ceremonies and visits to Crown Hill Cemetery and the Richard L. Roudebush VA
Medical Center. These events served as a meaningful tribute to the service and
sacrifice of Indiana’s veterans. Governor Braun emphasized the importance of
honoring those who have served our country with distinction, reaffirming his
commitment to ensuring they receive the full support and recognition they
deserve. He also expressed his gratitude to Secretary Collins and his team for
their ongoing dedication to improving the lives of Hoosier veterans.
As always, thank you for being a part of our team. Please feel free to reach
out if there's anything I can assist with.
Lana Keesling, Indiana GOP Chairwoman
