CA's Costly Enviro Programs Threaten Budget

It was not supposed to be this way. In the throes of last year’s budget turmoil, California’s spending plan at that time was supposed to bring stability. Yet here we are. Another May Revision, another budget deficit — this time for $12 billion.
While Gov. Gavin Newsom is right — the Trump tariffs are harming California’s economy and reducing tax revenues — the state’s current deficit and ongoing budget challenges are largely state-created. They result from years of poor spending choices and California’s excessively volatile revenue system. Consequently, resolving the current crisis and stabilizing the budget for the long-term requires responsible fiscal choices from Sacramento.

Newsom's Education Budget: High Spending, Low Results

Despite a $12 billion budget deficit, Governor Gavin Newsom still proposes to spend more on the state’s public schools, despite findings of a Georgetown University study showing that California is not getting education bang for its taxpayer buck.
Newsom’s updated budget includes $137.8 billion in total education funding, which consists of state, federal, and local tax dollars allotted to TK-12 education. This amount is nearly 3 percent more than the $133.8 billion in total education funding in the current 2024-25 budget.
The Education Data Initiative calculated that California ranks 16th in education funding among the states.
