Dear Supporter,
Charmaine Stick and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation were back in court to fight for transparency in First Nations communities. Charmaine has been fighting for accountability at the Onion Lake Cree Nation for years because Prime Minister Justin Trudeau still won’t enforce the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
We’re proud to stand with her.
Even though Charmaine and the CTF successfully forced the Onion Lake Cree Nation to publish financial statements in 2015 and 2016, it refused to open the books again last fall and was held in contempt of court.
We were back in court on June 15 because the band appealed the contempt ruling. We delivered strong arguments and expect the court’s decision soon. In the meantime, we need your help to send a message to Ottawa.
Please email Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and tell her to enforce the First Nations Financial Transparency Act: [email protected]
The law is simple: every chief and council must publish the band’s basic financial statements. Most First Nations follow the law, but we need to make it clear to the Trudeau government that it needs to support Charmaine by enforcing the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
Thank you so much for all of your support – it’s making a difference.
- Todd, Jasmine, Shannon and all of the CTF staff
