:
We have exciting news to share, John,
Gov. Bob Ferguson of Washington has signed two Right to Repair bills into law, making Washington the eighth state to legally protect our Right to Repair!
This landmark victory protects Washingtonians' rights to repair their consumer electronic devices, such as laptops, cellphones and home appliances, and wheelchairs.[1]
When we're able to fix our stuff, it lasts longer -- preventing waste and saving resources. But far too often, manufacturers restrict access to repair materials and provide them only to "authorized" service centers. Some manufacturers even use software to prevent technicians from fully installing spare parts.
In Washington, these kinds of repair restrictions are now a thing of the past, making the state a shining example for the rest of the country -- where we're still working hard to win the right to repair for all.
Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson and PIRG's Charlie Fisher celebrate the win.
Supporters like you made this victory possible, John.
WIth your support, we went door to door to advocate for the bills, and rallied support for the Right to Repair online. As a result of these efforts and more, thousands of PIRG supporters have sent messages to their legislators supporting the right to repair in Washington and across the nation.
To pass the consumer electronics repair bill, we also joined forces with 60 local repair shops from across Washington; a range of consumer, environmental and other advocates; and manufacturers -- including both Google and Microsoft.[2]
And we won't stop there. We'll carry the momentum of this victory in Washington forward. Together, our next Right to Repair victory could be just around the corner.
Thank you for all you do,
Faye Park
President
