** Last chance to tell the Chancellor: public transport is vital
------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Supporter

I emailed you earlier this month about the Comprehensive Spending Review. It is now just two weeks away.

11 June is when the Chancellor will set out spending plans for all Government departments for the next four years. We need to ensure that she recognises the vital importance of public transport.

If you have already used the easy form on our website to email the Chancellor, thank you! If not, please take the chance to do it today. There is not much time left.

We submitted our own recommendations to the Chancellor back in February. Here's what we called for:

** 1. Prioritise investment in local transport.
------------------------------------------------------------

Too often, Government funding is directed toward big, expensive road projects, while everyday local transport is underfunded. We're urging a shift in focus: prioritising investment in buses, walking and cycling, and local road safety improvements.

** 2. Move to long-term funding settlements.
------------------------------------------------------------

Local authorities currently face a cycle of short-term bidding wars for limited pots of funding – making it nearly impossible to plan and deliver long-term transport improvements. That needs to change.

** 3. Target bus investment based on need.
------------------------------------------------------------

Too many parts of the country lack a decent bus service. We're pushing for targeted revenue funding for buses based on need – especially in rural and disadvantaged areas – because every community deserves a reasonable level of service.

** 4. Freeze rail fares and support a root-and-branch review of the entire fares and ticketing system.
------------------------------------------------------------

We're calling for a freeze on rail fares, alongside a comprehensive overhaul of the ticketing system to make it both simpler and more affordable.

** 5. Fix it first.
------------------------------------------------------------

From potholes to outdated rail signalling and neglected bus stations, years of underinvestment have taken their toll. We want to see funding committed to renewing and improving existing infrastructure.

** 6. Support public transport through fairer taxation of car and air travel
------------------------------------------------------------

It's time to end the unfair advantage enjoyed by car and air travel when it comes to tax. Tax policy should encourage more sustainable travel choices – and the revenue raised should be invested in the future of transport.

If you haven't already, please use our easy form to email the Chancellor. We have provided a template message which you can edit with your own views and asks.
