On May 10th, our Caravan of Love took us to Jesucristo Vive shelter, where we celebrated Mother’s Day and Children’s Day with the incredible Haitian refugee families staying there.
With love and support from our community, we brought clothing, food, and toys to share. Volunteers and shelter residents also enjoyed meaningful activities that uplifted spirits and strengthened bonds thanks to our amazing partners at Psicólogos Sin Fronteras.
A special thank you to our recurring volunteer Noah, who generously offered vision exams and glasses to those in need—bringing clarity in more ways than one.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in spreading the love.

Thank you Borderlands Relief Collective

|
Last month, we returned to one of our established routes for our April water drop. Every site we visited showed signs of consumption: all of the water, Gatorades, care packages, and cans were gone, a clear reminder of the ongoing need in this harsh terrain.
We were joined by dedicated BRC members and a strong team of new and returning volunteers. This area still shows signs of regular crossings—the same region where two men tragically lost their lives on March 15th. Their memory fuels our continued efforts.
Thank you to everyone who showed up, packed supplies, and walked the route with us.

A few months ago, we had the heartbreaking task of assisting in the repatriation of Samuel Villegas Perez, a 20-year-old migrant from San Jorge Nuchita, Oaxaca. Of Mixtecan heritage, Samuel was one of the youngest individuals we’ve supported through our Volviendo a Casa program—and his case is one of the toughest we’ve ever faced.
Samuel left home with a dream: to earn enough to build a house, buy a car for his father, and purchase chiropractic equipment so he could continue his studies. His parents, who live modestly in their small pueblo, supported him in that dream. He was young, driven, and spoke both Mixteco and Spanish.
Tragically, Samuel lost his life in the desert—likely due to extreme heat, respiratory issues, and possibly trauma from a fall while hiking a mountain. He never made it to his destination.
This was the first time members of our Border Angels team were the ones to find a body. Through Volviendo a Casa, we coordinated with the Mexican Consulate to cover funeral expenses and prepare his remains for return to Oaxaca. We could not have done this without our partners at Angeles del Desierto and Borderlands Relief Collective.
Samuel is now back in the place he called home, with the family who loved him. His story reminds us of the incredible risks migrants take and the deep love that fuels their journey.

Marcos Lazada Juarez, May He Rest in Peace.
|
|
|
On May 5, a tragic human smuggling event in Torrey Pines State Beach claimed the lives of three migrants, including 18-year-old Marcos Lozada Juarez. Marcos had traveled by sea from Municipio de Mariano Escobedo in Veracruz, Mexico, hoping to reunite with his father and build a better life in the U.S. He lost his life in the attempt.
Marcos is the second youngest recipient of our Volviendo a Casa program, which helps repatriate the remains of migrants who pass away on their journey. His father, who had no idea of his plans to journey to the U.S. and is undocumented, was forced to leave the U.S. and return to Veracruz to bury his son.
We are working with Funeraria Aztlan to bring Marcos home and allow his family to say goodbye with dignity. You can click the button below to donate. Your donation will go directly toward funeral costs and the transportation of his remains.

Familias Reunidas Bond Program
|
|
|
Meet Kevin, a brave father, asylum seeker, and our latest bond fund recipient.
Kevin, 42, fled Venezuela after facing life-threatening persecution from an armed group known as Las Guerrillas del Frac. He left behind his wife and two children to save his life, a heart-wrenching decision no one should have to make.
For 7 months, Kevin was detained at the Desert View Adelanto Detention Center, with no family in the U.S. and no means to pay his bond. His family back home, despite their deep poverty, managed to gather a few dollars just to help with his transportation once released but couldn’t afford the bond.
Thanks to your support, our Familias Reunidas Immigration Bond Fund stepped in to secure Kevin’s release. He’s now with a long-time family friend who is offering him housing and helping him continue his asylum process with legal support.

Thank you St. Paul’s Episcopal School.
|
|
We were honored to welcome the 7th grade class from St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Oakland for a meaningful outreach experience. The students participated in a presentation and two Day Laborer Outreaches (DLOs), where they helped distribute 100 care packages and tote bags generously donated by Lia. Their engagement, empathy, and respectful interactions with the laborers were truly heartening—it was inspiring to witness these young individuals listen attentively and connect across lived experiences.
We visited all three laborer sites, though, unusually, fewer than 20 laborers were present—marking the lowest turnout we've seen. Many shared that work has significantly slowed since the Trump administration began, with potential clients hesitant to hire day laborers. Rumors of ICE raids near Home Depot locations have added to this fear, causing some to stop showing up entirely. Still, a number of laborers expressed their resolve to continue seeking work, refusing to let fear dictate their lives.
This visit showed us the resilience of the laborer community and the impact young people can have simply by showing up with openness and compassion.

Panga boat capsized in Torrey Pines, 3 migrants dead and 4 hospitalized
On May 5, a panga boat capsized on Torrey Pines State Beach at around 6:30 a.m., resulting in at least three dead and four hospitalized. United States Customs and Border Protection’s investigation found that the boat’s drivers were transporting Indian and Mexican migrants to the U.S.
Some occupants’ belongings were found on the beach around the panga boat, including Indian passports. Bystanders and San Diego lifeguards responded to the initial wreckage, rescuing four individuals who were then hospitalized. They also recovered three bodies — a 14-year-old boy, 18-year-old Marcos Lozada-Juarez, and a third unidentified man. The hospitalized individuals include the 14-year-old boy’s mother and father, the latter of whom is in a coma.

The IRS finalizes a deal to share tax information with immigration authorities
The Internal Revenue Service has reached an agreement with immigration authorities to share tax information about some immigrants without legal status, marking a major change in how tax records can be used.
