New data shows just how integral the AAPI community has been to America’s recovery effort.
1 in 5 physicians or surgeons in America is AAPI. So are 1 in 11 nurses -- the vast majority of whom are immigrants.
That’s to say nothing of the countless AAPI who are working essential jobs in grocery stores, farms, or restaurants -- keeping the country running even while they’re made targets of vitriol and xenophobia by none other than our commander-in-chief.
But the AAPI community has responded to hate with love, raising a total of $31 million for COVID relief from organizations around the country. It’s a gift that will strengthen the fight against the pandemic and quicken the speed of the nation’s recovery -- and it’s a gift that deserves to be paid back in kind.
Because right now, unfortunately, AAPI folx are suffering.
The unemployment rate for Asian Americans has climbed to 15% and stayed there -- even as the rest of the country begins to see a return to normalcy.
And historic trends show that income inequality is increasing more quickly in the AAPI community than any other -- inarguable proof of the kind of systemic discrimination that must be addressed if America seeks to give its AAPI members the dignity they deserve.
