Two of America’s most iconic animals, the gray wolf and the grizzly bear, are under serious threat due to efforts in Congress to remove critical protections under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
There are fewer than 2,000 grizzly bears left in the entire continental United States, but the Grizzly Bear State Management Act (H.R. 281/ S. 316) would jeopardize their continued recovery by stripping vital ESA protections from the bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The same protections that helped to bring the species back from the brink of extinction.
In addition to targeting grizzly bears, Congress is also seeking to strip ESA protections from gray wolves. The misleadingly named Pet and Livestock Safety Act (H.R. 845/S. 1306) has already cleared a key step in passing out of committee in the House and will likely be headed for consideration and a vote by the full House of Representatives soon.
What’s even worse is that both of these bills would also ban judicial review of the action, one of the main ways we have to fight back against these anti-wildlife attacks.
We must collectively give voice to the creatures who cannot speak for themselves and tell Congress that we oppose these deadly rollbacks! We cannot allow Congress to doom the symbols of the American wilderness to extinction. Gray wolves and grizzly bears are iconic native species and removing these critical protections will undermine their recovery and jeopardize their survival. Will you add your name and make it clear that the American people will not stand for this attack on our nation’s wildlife?
