Dear John,
People are marching in the streets around the world. They are seeking justice, demanding that our society value Black lives — and dreaming of what it could look like if our world emerged from this moment radically changed and better than before.
There could be no better time for this Thursday’s special virtual gathering with Valarie Kaur and Van Jones. In our fourth and final event in this series with Valarie, a civil rights lawyer and founder of the Revolutionary Love Project, she and Van will explore what it means to reimagine and remake America using the tools of revolutionary love. Van is the founder of Dream Corps, a CNN commentator, and CEO of REFORM Alliance. The event will take place on our Facebook Page — click here to follow to receive a notification when it starts.
This event will be co-hosted by One World and moderated by Chris Jackson, named one of TIME’s “12 Leaders Who Are Shaping the Next Generation of Artists.”
We will be graced with original music by Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records, and Valarie will share more excerpts from her book, See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love. There will also be an opportunity for live Q&A from all participants.
“The greatest social reformers in history did not only resist oppressors — they held up a vision of what the world ought to be...Any social harm can be traced to institutions that produce it, authorize it, or otherwise profit from it. To undo the injustice, we have to imagine new institutions — and step in to lead them.” - Valarie Kaur
We are in the midst of a mass uprising for Black lives. Countless people are flooding the streets in the name of George Floyd, and millions more are rising up in solidarity for racial justice. We have a real chance to make lasting and meaningful change, John.
Instead of understanding love as a flood of emotion, we need to recall love as a form of sweet labor: fierce, bloody, imperfect, and life-giving — a choice we make over and over again. History is full of leaders who've built entire nonviolent movements anchored in love. We can reclaim love as a force for justice in this time, and transition to a world that is better than before.
We hope this conversation can help ground you so we can face this moment with revolutionary love.
See you Thursday! the Dream Corps Team
