When immigrant rights are under threat, we take action in our communities and in our courts.

Legal advocacy has always been central to the NYIC’s mission. When legislation passed in 1987 allowing over 2.5 million immigrants to legalize their status, we rose to meet the need, offering critical legal and support services to our newest New Yorkers. When tens of thousands of migrants were bussed to New York without warning in 2022, we welcomed them with compassion and urgency, providing critical legal services, shelter referrals, and community support.

Today, our work continues. Our legal team is on the ground providing essential immigration legal services and standing up for the rights and dignity of immigrant communities. We’re fighting back against unjust actions targeting birthright citizenship, temporary protected status for refugees, and sanctuary city policies.
