News from Representative Bera

Dear John,

At a time when families across Sacramento County and the country are doing everything they can to make ends meet, House Republicans passed a deeply irresponsible budget last week that takes food off the table, rips away health care from millions and burdens future generations with even more debt—all to hand out tax breaks that disproportionately benefit the ultra-wealthy.

I was proud to stand united with every single House Democrat in voting against this legislation.

Let’s be clear about what this bill does: It makes the largest cuts to food assistance and Medicaid in history. It eliminates health coverage for millions of people, threatens access to care in rural and underserved communities and raises costs across the board for the poorest 10% of households in the country.

As a doctor, I’ve cared for patients who rely on Medicaid to manage chronic illnesses, get preventive care and keep their children healthy. These cuts would devastate our health care system—driving up uncompensated care costs, increasing strain on hospitals and clinics and leading to more patients showing up in emergency rooms sicker and more expensive to treat. It’s a step backward that will worsen health outcomes and raise costs for everyone.

While this is a setback, the fight to protect Americans’ health care is not over. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject this reckless proposal and work with us on a budget that reflects our shared values—protecting health care, reducing child hunger, investing in working families and growing the middle class. The American people deserve better than this.

Please keep reading below for more on what I’ve been working on — and thank you, as always, for staying informed and engaged. If you’d like real-time updates, I encourage you to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, X, Bluesky and Threads.

Be well,

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes in Fair Oaks

Image

Over the weekend, I joined the Fair Oaks community for their 27th annual Memorial Day ceremony to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. It was an honor to take part in this moving tribute—a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of our community.

Speaking Out Against DOGE Cuts

During last week's House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, I questioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the Trump Administration's demolition of USAID and spoke about the importance of providing food aid to people who depend on it throughout the world.

Honoring an Alzheimer's Advocate in Our Community

Image

I recently had the opportunity to recognize Barbara Marquez as the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement Advocate of the Month. Barbara’s journey—from caring full-time for her mother to becoming a powerful voice for caregivers across Sacramento County—reflects the strength and compassion that defines our community.

I’m especially grateful for her work helping organize my office's annual Brain Health Forum, which continues to bring resources and hope to families impacted by dementia.

Legislative Update

I recently joined my fellow colleagues who served on the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic during the 118th Congress in a joint statement expressing concern over the Trump Administration's deeply misguided and harmful new COVID-19 vaccine policies that limit the approval of updated COVID-19 vaccines primarily to older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions.

The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective and responsible for saving millions of lives. As a doctor, my concern continues to grow over this Administration's attacks on science and trust in vaccines.
