HIGHLIGHT PIECE OF THE WEEK |
"Safeguards" in Assisted Suicide Laws Removed Often |
PRAF's Policy Advisor, Jason Negri, says in this article, "Such ‘safeguards’ include waiting periods, residency and witness requirements, and conscience protection for doctors who don’t want to help their patients die...The safeguards are a calculated move to garner support from people who are uncertain about assisted suicide. The safeguards are often removed within a few years." |

Physicians Should Oppose Assisted Suicide
|
Dr. Jason T. Kolb, MD, and emergency care physician, writes, "On the battlefield, a soldier is obligated to disobey an illegal order from his commanding officer. So too am I compelled in the hospital to refuse a patient’s unethical request for the means to complete their suicide. Just as a physician would never hand a rope or gun to a patient wanting to end their life, neither should a physician hand a prescription to such a patient." |
| Opposition to UK Assisted Suicide Bill Growing |
In this piece, read three voices sharing their opposition to the UK's assisted suicide bill. One author states, "The risk is that the bill could unintentionally set us on a path where choosing to die becomes seen as a selfless or responsible act, disproportionately affecting the poorest and most vulnerable in our society, and safeguards will be eroded as society becomes 'trained' to see assisted dying as just another life option." |

France May Put Vulnerable People at Risk |
PRAF's Executive Director, Matt Vallière, wrote this on the French National Assembly vote from yesterday: There is a lot of talk of “rights” and “suffering,” of “liberté” and “fraternité,” but what the French proponents, just as those here in the US, fail to truly grapple with: who do these laws hurt? Who could be coerced? Do you violate the rights of others by passing such a law? |
