** A radical legal step towards ending impunity for the journalists murdered in Gaza
------------------------------------------------------------
Journalists have been targeted, detained and tortured by the Israeli army in Gaza — and RSF has taken a new approach towards bringing justice these crimes. The NGO has submitted ([link removed]) multiple formal requests to the International Criminal Court (ICC) asking that Palestinian journalists who are victims of Israeli war crimes in Gaza be allowed to participate as such in international judicial proceedings. If granted this status, these journalists would be able to present the ICC with the direct and personal harm they suffered at the hands of Israeli forces. RSF has filed four complaints ([link removed]) with the ICC concerning war crimes committed against journalists in Gaza and recently joined director Sepideh Farsi
([link removed]) at the Cannes Film Festival to pay tribute to Fatma Hassoun, one of nearly 200 journalists killed by the Israeli army in the past 19 months.

** VIDEO: Investigating the media offensive of a Russian propagandist
------------------------------------------------------------
“Decadent West, Nazi Ukraine as NATO’s vassal” — this is the type of rhetoric used by Oleg Nesterenko, a mysterious Russian “expert” in geopolitical affairs who has been living in France for nearly 30 years, to relay the Kremlin's narrative. Between spreading disinformation about the war in Ukraine, peddling Nazi artifacts and threatening RSF with reprisals for its investigation into his work, the influential propagandist is using every tactic to manipulate public debate developed by Vladimir Putin's regime as part of its hybrid war. Read the investigation by RSF ([link removed]) .

** RSF increases aid due to forced displacements in the DRC
------------------------------------------------------------
The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is degrading and journalists are forced to flee, seeking protection in less exposed areas and neighbouring countries. Since January 2024, RSF has provided aid ([link removed]) to around 40 threatened journalists and recorded around fifty attacks ([link removed]) on journalists and newsrooms in the North Kivu region.
** British journalist Will Neal expelled from Georgia
------------------------------------------------------------
Independent British journalist Will Neal was arbitrarily denied entry into Georgia ([link removed]) , where he has lived since 2022. The expulsion follows a hate campaign ([link removed]) led by pro-government politicians and media outlets. Recently, German, French, and Polish leaders condemned a “democratic setback” in the country, which is plagued by the blatant repression of voices that criticise authorities.
** Reliable information at risk after environmental disaster in Brazil
------------------------------------------------------------
One year ago, floods struck Brazil that displaced citizens and destroyed newsrooms and professional equipment. Local journalists and media outlets are still suffering the consequences ([link removed]) of the worst environmental disaster ever to hit the south of the country. In response to this disaster, RSF is working alongside journalists to equip professionals and launch a series of training courses to make sure their vital news reporting continues.
** Elections in the Philippines: time for reform
------------------------------------------------------------
From “red-tagging” to bogus trials, Filipino journalists are under serious threat, as illustrated by the case of investigative journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio ([link removed]) , who has been languishing in prison for over five years. Recent elections give Congress a fresh opportunity for change, and RSF has called on the newly elected officials to undertake reforms ([link removed]) to resolve the systemic problems threatening the country’s journalism.

The new RSF photo album is here!
Inside, you will find one of the most fascinating stories in contemporary photography, that of Vivian Maier. All her life, she roamed the streets of New York and Chicago, camera slung over her shoulder, carrying out a grandiose enterprise in the shadows. RSF invites you to follow in her footsteps. The album also features portraits of several press freedom defenders, including Tal al-Mallouhi, a blogger who survived the Bashar al-Assad regime, and Shawkan, an icon of fighting repression in Egypt.
