John,

A bill to overturn a 20-year ban on mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) was included in the Republican reconciliation bill that passed out of the House. The bill would hand mineral leases back to Twin Metals, a Chilean-owned mining conglomerate, paving the way for toxic copper and nickel mining that could pollute the area.

This legislation also silences the voices of Minnesotans, limiting our ability to challenge these harmful projects in court. It gives more power to foreign corporations while putting our communities and our environment in danger.

The Boundary Waters are a natural treasure. That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to permanently ban mining in the area, so it can be preserved for future generations. Some places, like the Boundary Waters, are simply too special to mine. We must protect clean water, pristine wilderness, and the livelihoods of people who depend upon this natural resource.

I won’t stop fighting until we secure permanent protections for the Boundary Waters, but I can’t do it alone.

Our end-of-month fundraising deadline is coming up this Saturday, May 31. Will you chip in $10, $25, $50, or whatever works for you to help sustain the fight to protect Minnesota’s most cherished natural resource?
