Helping ERPO Implementers in Indiana

Our new tool, Indiana’s Jake Laird Law Implementation Guide, offers a step-by-step for state implementers to understand the nuances of Indiana’s Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law. The Jake Laird Law (JLL) is Indiana’s version of an ERPO, or red flag law, named after a police officer who was shot and killed while responding to a call of a man walking in a neighborhood openly with a rifle in 2004. This led to the passage of the JLL law in 2005. Our guide includes comprehensive information on:

  • Components of the law
  • Similar Indiana laws & when to use them
  • Effectiveness of ERPO laws
  • Case studies

Why I Give

“I give because of what gun violence does to a family and a community. Gun violence should not be accepted as the norm, and yet so many families continue to experience tragic loss at the hands of those who have access to firearms.”
