Hi John,
Yesterday, we released a new investigation exposing the cruel conditions at a "Certified Humane," Whole Foods-supplying goat dairy in California's Central Valley. The 9,000-goat factory farm called Vera Goat Dairy supplies to Meyenberg, the largest goat milk producer in the U.S.
Our investigation found that Vera Goat Dairy is regularly dumping dozens of dead mother and baby goats in an illegal dead pile. Investigators found animals sick with respiratory infections, mothers with distended, engorged teats (a sign of potential mastitis infections), and clear public health concerns including cows, dogs, and birds coming into direct contact with the facility's goat graveyard. |

During the course of the investigation, DxE investigators rescued a sick mother goat and her baby who was attempting to nurse but was unable to due to his mother's distended and inflamed udders, as well as a second baby who was lethargic and in a state of respiratory distress with nasal discharge. The mother, whom rescuers named Sarah, and the second baby, named Castiel, were both found to have pneumonia and received medical treatment. Castiel also had polyarthritis caused by salmonella bacteria.
These animals would likely have ended up in Vera's goat graveyard if rescuers had not arrived just in time. But today, Sarah, Johnny, and Castiel are safe and free. |

An attorney on DxE's legal team reported Vera Goat Dairy's violations of animal cruelty laws and water regulations to the relevant authorities -- but they took no enforcement action against the company. So yesterday, activists mobilized at the facility to once again document the conditions, help animals in need of care, and publicly call on the authorities to stop the animal cruelty.
A team of investigators entered the facility in broad daylight and openly rescued two sick baby goats, now named Phoebe and Celia. Dozens of other activists held a vigil in front of the facility. Once Phoebe and Celia were safely on their way to getting medical care, the rescuers returned to the facility to speak directly to the authorities about what they saw inside the facility. |

The sheriffs ultimately released them without any charges at this time, though they indicated that the rescue is pending further investigation. Following their release from custody, these brave rescuers went right to the Kings County Sheriff's Office to continue speaking up for the thousands of goats still suffering at Meyenberg's Vera Goat Dairy. Officers accepted their reports of criminal animal cruelty. We hope that they will investigate and prosecute this factory farm for their crimes against animals.
Please help us tell the world the stories of Phoebe, Celia, Sarah, Johnny, and Castiel. Their stories hold the key to creating change. Y our support makes it possible for us to tell the world these stories of rescue, recovery, and the need for radical change. Please share and donate today.
Thank you,
Cassie |
