John, this month’s agreement with the EU was a positive first step to help fix the relationship with our closest neighbours.

The Conservatives’ botched deal left us weaker, poorer, and more isolated. Today, with war raging in Europe and Trump instigating a worldwide trade war, our ties to the EU are more important than ever.

But Labour’s agreement should only be the first step - not the finish line.

Only the Liberal Democrats are supporting a much more ambitious path to rebuild UK-EU relations and make the UK stronger, safer, and wealthier.

We’re the only party saying we should negotiate a bespoke customs union with the EU to rip up red tape and boost British exports.

It’s the single biggest thing the Government could do to boost growth and fix the public finances. While last week’s deal could boost UK GDP by 0.2% by 2040, a proper trade deal, including a bespoke customs union, would boost it by 2.2%!

We’ve also been championing a Youth Mobility Scheme, to expand opportunities for young people by allowing them to study and work across Europe. After months of Lib Dem pressure, there was only a vague commitment to work towards this in last week’s agreement.

From defence to help for touring artists, we need much quicker progress, not more kicking the can down the road.

In these challenging times, the only way to thrive is through ambitious, bold policies.

So while Labour lacks the urgency and vision for real change, and while the naysayers and dinosaurs of Reform and the Conservatives repeat the tired arguments of the past, we’re charting an exciting path forward for the country.
