Hi John,

Since Republicans took total control of Washington and embarked on their hyper-partisan budget plans, I’ve said this next phase of our work will be about values. In the dead of night last week, Republicans made their core values crystal clear.

From overnight committee meetings to forcing votes in the middle of the night coupled with backroom dealing and being summoned and scolded at the Trump White House, House Republicans did everything possible to ram through a big, bad bill for billionaires at the expense of everyone else. And at every turn, I worked to communicate our values of fairness and opportunity.

I was on the front lines of an over 12-hour committee hearing fighting against this callous bill at the beginning of this process in February. I offered amendments and motions to stop the Republicans' cruel plan and offer a defense for core programs like Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP. And last week, whether at a hastily assembled 10:00 pm committee vote on a Sunday night or on the House floor at 3:00 am, I shared our values that we cannot concentrate economic prosperity to the very top.

Because of House action from the Republicans, ending health care coverage for nearly 14 million people, eliminating school meals for 18 million children, cutting mental health services, crippling nursing home care, and robbing the chance at higher education for millions of Americans is now on the doorstep of the American people. And this is happening while giving substantial tax giveaways to millionaires and billionaires and adding trillions to the deficit. This is not an exaggeration — it’s real life.

No matter what, I will continue to stand up and speak out for Rhode Island values.
