The crash happened at around 1:57 p.m. near the intersection of Saticoy Street and Cleon Avenue. According to the LAPD, the officers were responding to a domestic abuse restraining order call when they collided with the gray Honda. LAPD said the unit was in Code 3, which means it had its lights and sirens on before the crash. "A vehicle pulled in front of them to make a left turn. They struck that vehicle on the driver's side," said Detective Megan Aguilar with the LAPD. Firefighters had to extricate the victim, identified only as a 70-year-old male, who was trapped in the car. They tried to render aid to the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The two officers, both 24 years old, were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They brought a third victim, a woman in her 30s, to the hospital. LAPD told City News Service that she was in stable condition. Pictures of the area from SkyFOX showed the area taped off with multiple officers on scene. There was what appeared to be a sheet on the ground near where officers were standing. It was not clear what led to the shooting. Anyone with information about the case should call the LAPD. FOX 11 Father handed gun to son in alleged drive-by gang killing, LAPD says On a Monday night in February, police say, Roberto Martinez took his 14-year-old son in the Pico-Union neighborhood on a graffiti spree. With a can of yellow spray paint, they marked the facades of a pawn shop, laundromat and furniture store with the names of their gangs, according to a Los Angeles Police Department detective in a search warrant affidavit. Driving down Normandie Avenue, Martinez and his son came across Kevin Rivera, who was crossing the street, the affidavit says. The muzzle of a handgun poked out from their car’s passenger window, a witness told police. Martinez’s son squeezed the trigger five times, shooting Rivera to death and wounding two others, the detective wrote in the affidavit. Martinez, 43, and his son are charged with murdering Rivera, whom Martinez believed to belong to a rival gang, the detective wrote in the affidavit. Martinez has pleaded not guilty. A lawyer who represented Martinez at his arraignment directed questions to the Los Angeles County public defender’s media representatives, who didn’t respond to a request for comment. It wasn’t clear who was representing Martinez’s son, whose case isn’t public because of his age. Los Angeles Times 1 dead after fatal Gramercy Park shooting involving ‘4 to 5 subjects’: police A shooting involving “four to five subjects” left a man dead in L.A.’s Gramercy Park neighborhood overnight, according to authorities. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that gunfire erupted around 11:55 p.m. Friday in the 9800 block of South Van Ness Avenue just north of West Century Boulevard. “A man went outside to his vehicle [when] four to five subjects approached him and fired rounds,” an LAPD spokesperson said. “He was not struck, but his vehicle was.” Arriving officers found another man on the ground with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased, the spokesperson said. His name was not revealed, and no information on whether anyone was taken into custody was disclosed. Video posted to the Citizen App shows that police had blocked off an alleyway in the wake of the shooting. It was not immediately known if the incident was gang-related; however, LAPD says it appears that the man who was fired at but not struck and the man who died did not know each other. KTLA 5 Illegal party recruits participants on social media before vandalism, chaos in downtown LA After a crowd of more than 1,000 people caused a mayhem in the downtown Los Angeles neighborhood Saturday night, investigators are now poring over surveillance images and social media posts to track down those responsible, especially people who vandalized countless businesses as well as an LAPD car and Metro trains. Large groups of people were caught on video, kicking and spray-painting the patrol vehicle while another group of about 50 trespassers blocked two trains at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Maple Street and vandalized them. An unconfirmed number of businesses near the Fashion District, ranging from restaurants to medical clinics, in the area were also spray-painted with the backdrop of illegal fireworks. Mayor Karen Bass said the chain of destructive events began as an illegal party at a vacant warehouse after participants were recruited online. “This type of behavior is completely unacceptable,” Bass said in a statement, pledging to work closely with the City Attorney and the District Attorney to hold those responsible to the fullest extent of the law. Bass added that officers were assaulted by the crowd during the three-hour melee, adding one officer had to be medically treated after being struck in the face with a bottle. KTLA 5 New California Highway Patrol K9 teams trained to sniff out fentanyl A new generation of crime-fighting canines has officially joined the California Highway Patrol, with six highly trained K9 teams now deployed across the state — and for the first time, these dogs are hitting the streets trained from day one to detect fentanyl. Announced Friday by the Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office, the new K9 unit includes five Belgian Malinois and one German Shepherd. The teams have completed months of intensive training aimed at improving public safety and addressing the growing threat of fentanyl, as well as other illicit substances. “These new K-9 teams have demonstrated incredible dedication and skill throughout their training,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “They’re not just protecting our communities—they’re enhancing our department’s ability to fight crime and save lives.” This latest class marks a historic milestone for the CHP, becoming the first to receive instruction specifically on fentanyl detection during initial training — a direct response to California’s escalating opioid crisis. In 2024 alone, CHP K9 units were involved in the seizure of nearly 823 pounds of fentanyl statewide, authorities confirmed. KTLA 5 California man pleads guilty to Ponzi scheme after attempting underwater evasion A Northern California man pleaded guilty Thursday to a Ponzi-like fraud scheme, following his arrest in 2020 where he tried to escape the FBI using a submarine in Shasta Lake, officials said. Matthew Piercey, a 48-year-old from Palo Cedro, admitted to wire fraud, money laundering and witness tampering in the $35 million investment fraud scheme that occurred from July 2015 to August 2020 , the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of California said in a news release. In the operation, Piercey scammed investors by making false statements under the guise of two investment companies, Family Wealth Legacy and Zolla, the attorney’s office said. Piercey lied to investors about an " Upvesting Fund ,” which was supposedly a successful “automated algorithmic trading fund.” Piercey used investor money to pay other investors, the attorney’s office said, and eventually used a chiropractor business in Redding to conceal his operation and money. He gained $35 million in investment funds but paid investors only $8.8 million over the course of the scheme and spent the rest of the money on personal and business expenses, such as two residential properties and paying a criminal defense firm.
