Last week, the San Diego City Council voted to increase funding for the San Diego Police Department.
Following weeks of protests in every state across the country -- including more than a dozen here in San Diego County -- nearly 5,000 people called in or wrote to their City Councilmembers to share their disapproval of this budget. In all, public comment lasted for a remarkable 11 HOURS. But in the end, the City Council President -- who is now running for Congress against Sara here in CA-53 -- made the motion to approve the budget, with hardly any acknowledgment of the thousands of constituents pleading for change.
It's clear that San Diego needs to rethink how it allocates and prioritizes funds -- and frankly that's the case all across the country. What we heard in call after call during public comment at Monday's San Diego City Council meeting is what we've been hearing in protest after protest all across the country: We need a serious rebalance of our priorities and our budget. We need to make greater investments in social services. We need to demilitarize the police.
Our elected officials should be accountable to their constituents -- and budgets should reflect our values, yet this one ignored the voices of thousands of San Diegans calling for change. Sara will never shy away from taking on the tough fights and speaking truth to power. In Congress, we know she will always put our community first.
Let's send Sara to Congress and demand real change. We don't have time to wait.
