Hi John,

Today is a historic day in the battle for equality. Today, the Supreme Court finally affirmed that sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination are prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This is a huge victory for LGBTQ people who will now have legal recourse against discrimination in many contexts.

No one should be denied a job or fired simply because of who they are or whom they love. For the past two decades, federal courts have determined that discrimination on the basis of LGBTQ status is unlawful discrimination under federal law. Today’s historic ruling by the Supreme Court affirms that view.

But there is still so much work to be done. We still need to pass the Equality Act, which would address significant gaps in federal civil rights laws and improve protections for everyone.

As your member of Congress, I will keep fighting to ensure that the Senate and President enact this crucial legislation that was passed by the Democratic-led House of Representatives last year. Democrats will not rest until everyone can secure the promise of the American Dream.
