Tune into May’s Episode of Climate Check
Brynn is joined by Julie Raskin, Executive Director of the Sanitation Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of New York City’s Department of Sanitation. We all touch trash every day, but do you know what happens after you put it in the bin? Julie explains how our waste is actually full of valuable resources that can save energy and money if properly sorted and processed. Educating everyone from toddlers to large businesses about NYC’s climate champions in uniform is the mission of her team. Listen to fascinating anecdotes about truck routing, waste audits, free Yankees tickets, and yes...rats.
New to 350Brooklyn? Welcome!
Sunday, June 15 • 7:00 PM • on Zoom
Once a month we welcome newcomers with an informal orientation to all the ways you can take action with 350Brooklyn. Come for a conversation with an old hand. Everyone is welcome! Register here to attend orientation.
Meet the Judds, a climate family extraordinaire!
We are so happy to introduce the Judd family, highlighting our volunteers for our 10-year anniversary! They have been involved with 350Brooklyn since 2016, and perhaps the funnest members are the youngest members, showing up to pitch in at celebrations and bring hope and cheer! Poppa Chris said, “It’s easy to become frustrated and lose patience, especially with elected representatives. Having faith that basic human decency and common sense will convince people to protect the planet helps a lot.”
We can count on the Judd family to show up, pitch in, get the conversations flowing, and get the dancing started!
Help promote our podcast!
350Brooklyn’s podcast Climate Check is continuing to grow and needs a marketing guru on the team! Experience with, or knowledge of, social media and marketing is preferred but we happily welcome all who are interested! Email the Climate Check team at [email protected] to get more info.
RESIST: Protecting the People of Gaza
What’s Going On?
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a devastating military assault on Gaza. In response to a deadly Hamas attack, Israel has bombed Gaza with more than 70,000 tons of explosives—more than was dropped on Dresden, Hamburg, and London during World War II. Over 60,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed, the majority women and children. Entire neighborhoods, hospitals, water systems, and power grids have been obliterated. Families are starving. The injured cannot receive care. On May 19, only five aid trucks were allowed in—two carrying burial shrouds.
This is a humanitarian catastrophe. The people of Gaza are being starved, displaced, and killed, with no safe place left to go. The scale of suffering is unbearable—and made worse by U.S. complicity. Our government has sent nearly $18 billion in weapons to Israel. New York State by default has contributed over $1.4 billion—money that could have funded schools or solar power for millions of homes.
Why We Care
We care because this is a genocide, as both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have stated. And we care as environmentalists because war destroys not only lives, but ecosystems. The bombs have wiped out Gaza’s tree cover, native species, and farmland. The carbon emissions from the first 120 days of this war exceeded the annual footprint of 26 of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations. Rebuilding Gaza’s ruins will emit more than the annual emissions of 135 countries. The lack of humanitarian aid, and attacks on Gaza’s medical infrastructure, have also created the tragic social conditions that foster antibiotic resistance. Environmentalism means understanding how everything is connected. Climate justice cannot be separated from human justice. We must demand an end to this war—not just for Palestine, but for our shared future on this planet.
