According to the Cornell Lab Bird Academy, in avian biology, excavators are bird species that dig their own nest cavities or tunnels, either in sandy soil (such as Belted Kingfishers, Bank Swallows, bee-eaters, mot-mots, and Crab Plovers) or in wood (woodpeckers).
