Dear John,
As Americans, we should never forget the generations of brave veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and our freedom. Memorial Day is when we solemnly join together as a nation to remember, respect, and honor their sacrifices and remember them with gratitude.
Many of our brothers, sisters, and siblings died due to their wounds from combat. Others died from cancers and diseases resulting from exposure to toxic chemicals and burn pits, and those who suffered or are suffering from invisible wounds like PTSD, depression, traumatic brain injuries, and suicide.
The combat injuries and deaths, the invisible wounds many of us carry are the result of service to our country. Today is the day we need to remember and honor those we've lost and those who served at such a great cost to themselves and to their families. Today we honor the veterans who paid the ultimate price and their families who continue to pay daily because their loved ones are no longer with them.
On behalf of the Democratic Party of Oregon's Veterans Caucus, I ask that you take a moment today and join us in remembering and honoring those who died while serving their country. If you know someone who has lost a veteran family member or if you know a veteran, especially if you think they are isolated, please reach out to them today.
