Hi John,

Since George Floyd’s horrific murder a few weeks ago, Maine people have joined in protests expressing anger and frustration at the atrocities Black and Brown communities across the nation, including right here in our state, have faced at the hands of law enforcement.

The Maine Dems support these protests.

Systemic racism in Maine against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color extends beyond police brutality--from deadly racism in our criminal justice system to the unacceptable disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on the health of African American Mainers.

Our silence allowed this unequal system to exist in the first place, and our continued silence will allow it to flourish. The Maine Dems will not sit in silence any longer.

We have a tremendous opportunity to support communities and organizations that have been fighting injustice for generations and provide resources to support the needs of those communities. It’s time we do so. That starts today with asking you to show your support by donating to a few of the organizations who have been doing important work with and for vulnerable communities here in Maine:

For Us, By Us Fund [ [link removed] ]
The For Us, By Us Fund is a flexible funding and organizing initiative that seeks to support the creative and organizing efforts of people of color in Maine, founded by two Portland-based Black women organizers.

Maine Initiatives COVID-19 Community Care Fund [ [link removed] ]
Through the COVID-19 Community Care Fund, Maine Initiatives is making rapid-response grants to the grassroots organizations led by and advocating for those folks who are most at risk in this crisis: indigenous, black and immigrant folks; working class, low income, and poor people; and those that are too often pushed to the margins through incarceration, homelessness, disability, etc.

New Mainers Public Health Initiative [ [link removed] ]
New Mainers Public Health Initiative aims to empower, inform, and educate new Mainers about preventive health measures through the promotion of healthy habits by developing the capacity to mobilize community partnerships in identifying and solving health problems in order to bridge the gap in health care service delivery and decrease health disparity.

We also encourage you to join in supporting Black-owned businesses in Maine whenever possible. Consider visiting this website with a directory of Black-owned businesses when choosing your next place to shop. [ [link removed] ]

This is one of the first steps in our perpetual commitment to BIPOC communities throughout our state, and it won’t be the last. We are excited to continue this work as an active ally.

Thank you for all that you do,

Kathleen
