Fellow activist,
Today marks the five-year anniversary of the senseless murder of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer after a store clerk alleged that he made a purchase with a counterfeit $20 bill. We continue to feel sickened by this horrific event. Our hearts go out to his family, who continue to feel the pain no family should ever have to experience.
NPP’s CEO, Kadida Kenner, and I recently had the opportunity to go to George Floyd Square while in Minneapolis with colleagues from other states doing similar work. Being there was an emotional experience and one that I will never forget. When the wind picked up while we were paying our respects and alone with our thoughts, it flowed through all of the offerings laid out in memoriam. You could feel the emotion. As we walked to the Say Their Names Cemetery, it grounded me in this work. On the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, we also remember Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Ahmaud Arbery, Daunte Wright, and the thousands of Black lives lost at the hands of police. The movement for Black Lives Matter continues through community, engagement, activism, and mobilization.

Far too often, we see policies being passed that aim to silence our voices and disenfranchise Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. We must continue to engage our centered communities and advocate for policy change that centers Black, Indigenous, and other people of color and brings about the change that we want to see, including policing reform, commonsense gun laws, protecting the freedom to vote, and more.
That is why our work is so important. Let us not forget: If we’re not voting, someone else is, and it’s their voice being heard.
Together,

The New Pennsylvania Project (NPP) is a voting rights organization with a year-round primary focus on voter registration, civic education, and mobilization. NPP centers historically disenfranchised and often neglected Black, Indigenous and other people of color, immigrant communities and the youth in our work. Through civic engagement, we ensure all eligible voters feel compelled to exercise their freedom to vote in the Commonwealth.
