John,
Follow up soil testing has been standard procedure after nearly every major wildfire in California for the past two decades. But right now, Donald Trump’s FEMA is neglecting its standard process — and it risks exposing entire communities to long-term health threats.
Now, the Los Angeles Times has found troubling results in our soil:

Even before this report, I've been sounding the alarm on the possibility of toxic chemicals being in our soil, and it’s why I led seven of my colleagues in a letter to FEMA asking that they follow their own precedent and test and remediate burn areas.
Know that I’m on this. I’m going to be even more aggressive holding FEMA accountable and ensuring that this administration gives Los Angeles the recovery support we deserve.
We need to make sure that victims can be confident that the homes they rebuild are safe.
We’ve got a long way to go to get back to normalcy. But every day I’m working to ensure that Los Angeles and everyone who calls it home comes back stronger and healthier than before.
