Friends,

Today is a very special day for the First State -- it's Separation Day! Before our nation declared independence in July of 1776, our state made the courageous choice to separate from Great Britain and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

This Delaware holiday celebrates the independence of our state from the very beginning and reminds us of what is possible when the First State pulls together.

Usually, we celebrate Separation Day with a parade in New Castle where the vote to reject Great Britain's rule and William Penn's governance was held over 200 years ago. This is one of my favorite events of the year! Unfortunately, I'm unable to wear my colonial-style attire this year as the parade and other activities were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Even though we can't be together to celebrate our state's independence in the way that we usually do, it doesn't mean we can't celebrate in other ways!

One of the best ways we can celebrate is by showing our support to the folks up and down Delaware who are helping to care for our neighbors during this pandemic. If you have some time today, I'd encourage you to give back to our state in any way that you are able to:

Volunteer and donate to organizations like Food Bank of Delaware , Blood Bank of Delmarva, and Meals on Wheels, Cornerstone West CDC and West Side Grows Together, Easterseals, United Way of Delaware, and Children and Families First.

Dine-in or take out meals from restaurants throughout the state like La Fia Bistro and Fat Rick's BBQ in Wilmington, 33 West Ale House and Grill in Dover and Smith's Cafe in Seaford and Nicola Pizza in Rehoboth Beach.

Say thank you to all of the frontline workers who are continuing to provide essential goods and services to our communities -- doctors, nurses, EMTs, postal workers, grocery store employees and so many more.

Let's use this day to take care of our state and each other. Happy Separation Day to all!

Stay well,

Tom
