Friend, I want to tell you a story about my first campaign for elected office. It won’t take more than a minute, but if you don’t have the time, will you consider contributing to my people-powered campaign for US Senate?
When I was 24, I did something I never thought I’d do — I decided to run for the Minneapolis Board of Education.
My amazing campaign team in 2004.
I wasn’t planning on running for office. I actually tried to recruit someone older, ‘more experienced’ for the job. But when no one wanted to step up, I did.
I knew that Minneapolis needed a strong advocate on the school board — someone from our own community to fight for what our kiddos needed. When folks in my community insisted I was the person for the job, I pulled over to the side of the road and wrote up my first campaign plan.
Political insiders cast me aside. They thought I was too young, and too inexperienced, to win. To be honest — I wasn’t sure if I would win either.
But I sure as heck was going to give it my all.
So what did I do? I built the strongest possible grassroots campaign — spending time in my community, listening to voters who were often disregarded, and hearing their needs.
Not only did I win the most votes in that election, but I became the youngest person and the first Native American woman to serve on the Minneapolis school board.
A lot has changed since my first campaign, but one thing is still the same — it’s powered by people like you, not corporate PACs that want to dictate how I govern. Will you rush a $10 contribution now so we can make history again?
