BREAKING: True North Legal and Alliance Defending Freedom File Lawsuit to Defend Minnesota Girls’ Sports |
This week, True North Legal announced a partnership with our legal allies at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) in a critical new case: Female Athletes United v. Minnesota, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
This lawsuit challenges a Minnesota policy that allows male athletes to compete in girls’ high school sports—a policy that has harmed young women and violated the equal opportunity protections guaranteed by Title IX. Our own Renee K. Carlson, General Counsel of True North Legal, is serving as co-counsel in the case. She offered this powerful statement:
“For more than a decade I have been fighting on the frontlines for female athletes when the MSHSL first adopted its discriminatory policy erasing girls from girls’ sports and have worked tirelessly to overturn it since. Defending against aggressive attempts to push women and girls out of their own sports is always the right thing to do, not just because it’s a good policy or lawful.
At the heart of this issue is something deeper than sports. We’re in a cultural battle over truth—about the real, physiological differences between men and women. Those differences matter because they’re what make girls’ sports worth protecting.” NEWS COVERAGE OF THE CASE

Legislative Roundup: Week of May May 19-24 |
Minnesota's 2025 Legislative Session The deadline for Minnesota's legislative session arrived on Monday, May 19, with much budget work remaining for the Minnesota legislature. Legislators have spent this week negotiating policy and budget priorities after receiving the joint budget agreement from leaders of the House of Representatives, the State Senate, and the Governor's office last Thursday, May 15. A special session will be called by Governor Walz, as early as the Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, and legislators will vote omnibus policy packages into state law. Legislators are looking to finish up legislative work before June 1, when layoff notices in state agencies would be sent. If the legislature is unable to agree to budget proposals, the government would go into a shutdown effective July 1.
We plan to send you a full legislative update once the legislature completes its work as we track many public policy provisions of the omnibus bills. A couple remaining issues which we are monitoring in omnibus bills are the following: Preserving funding for Nonpublic Students
Passing a small expansion to the Child Tax Credit, granting tax relief for qualifying families when the family has had a baby within the taxable year Stopping the legalization of Mobile Sports Gambling |
